How to Prepare for Police Academy Physical Agility Testing

Feb 10, 2025

5 Tips to Master the Police Academy Physical Agility Test

The physical agility test (PAT) is a crucial part of police academy entry and training. It measures endurance, strength, and overall fitness to ensure recruits can handle the physical demands of law enforcement. Here’s how to prepare and pass with confidence.

1. Know the Fitness Standards

Each police academy has different physical requirements, including running, push-ups, sit-ups, and obstacle courses. Knowing the exact test components helps you train effectively.

Tip: Check your academy’s fitness standards in advance and tailor your workout routine to meet or exceed the requirements.

2. Build Cardiovascular Endurance

Many PATs include a timed 1.5-mile run or sprinting drills. Improving your cardio capacity ensures you maintain speed and stamina during testing.

Tip: Incorporate interval training with sprints and long-distance runs to enhance endurance and recovery.

3. Improve Upper Body and Core Strength

Strength is essential for tasks like lifting, climbing, and controlling suspects. Push-ups, sit-ups, and bodyweight exercises help build necessary muscle endurance.

Tip: Set a daily goal for push-ups, pull-ups, and core exercises to gradually increase strength and stamina.

4. Practice Functional Movements

Obstacle courses, stair climbs, and dummy drags simulate real-life police duties. Practicing these movements will prepare you for the agility portion of the test.

Tip: Train with weighted carries, sled drags, and quick directional changes to improve functional fitness.

5. Simulate Test Conditions

Training in conditions similar to the actual test reduces anxiety and improves performance. Time yourself while completing test exercises to monitor progress.

Tip: Wear similar gear (if allowed), train outdoors, and practice all components back-to-back to replicate test-day fatigue.

Excelling in the physical agility test requires preparation, endurance, and functional strength. By training consistently and following these strategies, you’ll be ready to meet and exceed academy fitness standards.
